Olin katsastelemassa oppilaidemme isien työmaata. Tämä isä kertoi saaneensa silmälasit itselleen ja vaimolleen viime viikolla, kun olimme jakamassa niitä. Minä en muistanut häntä, onhan paikalla aina jopa satoja ihmisiä.

I was watching the fathers work of our students. This fisherman told me he got a pair of glasses for himself and his wife last week when we were distributing them. I didn't remember him as there are always hundreds of people.

On the beach, there are all sorts of storing and transporting boxes.

Tässä vedetään verkon saalista pikkuhiljaa rantaa kohti. Vene on jossain kauempana vielä ja lähestyy verkon mukana rantaa. Menee ehkä kolme tuntia, ennenkuin kalasaalis on myyntipöydällä ihan siinä rannan tuntumassa.

Here men are slowly hauling the net's catch towards the shore. The boat is still somewhere further out and is approaching the shore together with the net. It will probably take about three hours before the catch is on a sales counter right next to the beach.

Kookoskuidusta valmistettua narua tarvitaan satoja ja taas satoja metrejä. Verkon toista päätä vedetään jossain kauempana samalla rannalla.

Hundreds, and again hundreds, of metres of coir rope is needed. The other end of the net is being dragged somewhere further away on the same beach.

Onneksi teetaukokin koittaa aikanaan. Kalastajat uurastavat koko yön ja joskus jopa toisen kierroksen merellä iltapäivällä. Saaliin määrästä riippuen kunkin venekunnan kalastajaporukan jäsen hankkii päivässä 100 - 2000 lankan rupiaa elikkäs tämän hetken vaihtokurssin mukaan noin 70 snt - 20€.

Vaihtokurssi muuttuu tietenkin hieman päivittäin, niinkuin pörssiasioihin kuuluu.

Fortunately, a tea break follows in due course. Fishermen are toiling all night long and sometimes even do another round at sea in the afternoon. Depending on the amount of catch, each boat crew member earns 100 – 2000 Lankan rupees, i.e. at the current exchange rate about 70 cents – 20 €.

Of course, the rate will change a little daily, as is the case in the exchange business.

Rathgaman kylässä oli organisoitu silmälasien katselmus. 

Valokuvaaja oli paikallisesta lehdestä myös paikalla tekemässä juttua tilaisuudesta.

An eyeglass viewing was organised in the Rathgama village.

A photographer from the local paper was also present, making a story of the occasion.

Väkeä virtasi paikalle tuktukeilla, mopoilla, polkupyörillä ja kävellen.

Folk was streaming into the place by tuktuks, mopeds, bikes and on foot.

Todistaakseen, että näkee nyt hyvin tämä mies luki ääneen lehden juttua :)

200 kpl silmälaseja meni reilussa tunnissa. Voi niitä ilon ilmeitä!

200 pcs of glasses were passed on in good one hour. Oh, those happy expressions!

Lentokyydin aikana Suomesta Sri Lankaan aina muutamat silmälasit särkyvät. Mukana oli tällä kertaa 700 kpl ja noin 20 oli mennyt rikki.

During the flight from Finland to Sri Lanka some glasses always get broken. This time we had 700 pcs on board and about 20 were damaged.

Ennen sovitusta puhdistimme kaikki silmälasit huolellisesti.

Before fitting, we cleaned all the glasses carefully.

Samassa Rathgaman kylässä koululaiset aloittivat iltapäivällä klo 15.30 englannin kielen opinnot.

In the same Rathgama village schoolchildren started their English lessons at 15.30 p.m.

Jännitti niin, ettei paikallaan pysynyt :0)

One was feeling so nervous that could not keep still :0)

Opettaja selitti sinhalan kielen avulla englannin kielen ääntämistä.

The teacher was explaining the English pronunciation with the help of Sinhala.

Jos ei ole kynille penaalia, säilyvät ne näinkin tallessa. Tänä vuonna on tarkoitus avustaa niitä köyhimpien perheiden lapsia hankkimalla esim. juuri kynäkoteloita, reppuja ja semmoista meille niin tavallista ja jokapäiväistä. 

If there is no case for pencils, this is one way to store them. This year we aim at helping the children of those families with the least means by providing, for example, pencil cases, backpacks and other such ordinary and everyday things for us.

Yksi opettajista saa perheenlisäystä ja uusi opettaja on jo kaverina tutustumassa lapsiin.

One of the teachers is expecting an addition to the family and a new teacher is already accompanying her, getting to know the children.

Kouluvuoden aloitus Start of the School Year

Valtion koulujen lukuvuoden aloitus on aina hyvin urheilullinen. Tässä katsojat hurraavat ja kannustavat omia kavereitaan. Pelaajilla sentään on urheiluasut, nuo punaiset.

State schools always start their school term with very sporty events. Here the spectators are cheering and spurring their own mates. The players at least have sport outfits, those red ones.

Me Telluschoolissa aloitimme myös pelaamalla, mutta ei kuitenkaan krikettiä. 

Pöytäpelit ja palapelit varsinkin kiinnostivat lapsia. 

Suklaatakin tarjosin siinä pelien tiimellyksessä.

Tipujen touhua ihmeteltiin myös. Kukko ja kana, kukula ja kikili ovat nuo😊

We at Telluschool also started by playing, but not cricket.

Table games and jigsaws were of special interest to the children.

I also offered them choclate in the heat of the games.

We were also wondering the activities of birdies. A cock and a hen, kukula and kikili as they are.

Lapsille riittää niin pieni asia tuomaan iloa. Voi kun me aikuisetkin aina osaisimme olla yhtä avoimia ilolle😍

Kaikki pelit ja muut materiaalit ovat turistien lahjoittamia, kuten aiemmassa jutussa kerroin.

Such small things will bring joy for children. Oh, how I wish we adults were as open for joy :)

All the games and other materials are donated by tourists, as I told you earlier.

Silmälasien tuoma ilo on aina yhtä hämmentävää. Hiki vain valuu ja väkeä virtaa. 

Yhtenä aamuna viidakon kylässä, jossa olin yötä, aamulla klo 5.30 oli portilla ensimmäisiä kolkuttajia rillejä sovittamaan.  Tieto oli levinnyt talosta toiseen.

 Siinä Punaisen ristin rakentamassa tsunamikylässä on noin 140 asumusta keskellä isoa kumipuumetsää ja teeviljelmiä. Kotikujilla on aamuisin kanarialintuja ja aamun konsertti on upea. Yöllä kuuluu vain kaskaitten siritys ja tähdet loistavat laajalla taivaalla.

The joy brought by glasses is always confusing. One is sweating and people are streaming in. One morning, in the jungle village where I stayed overnight, as early as 5.30 a.m. there were the first people knocking at the gate, coming to fit glasses. The information had spread from house to house. 

In that village there are about 140 dwellings in the middle of a large rubber tree forest and tea plantations. In the home lanes canary birds are singing in the morning and their concert is magnificent. At night, there is only the chirping of cicade and the stars are glowing in the wide sky.

Uuden kouluvuoden alku Start of the New School Year

 Turistien ja vapaaehtoisten lahjoittamia materiaaleja. Näitä opettajat saavat vapaasti käyttää,kunhan eivät unohda niitä kotiinsa. Myös vapaaehtoistyötä koulussamme tekevät saavat näitä käyttöönsä.

Materials donated by tourists and volunteers. Teachers may use them freely provided that they do not forget them at home. Also, volunteers in our school can use them.

Kouluvuoden alussa jokaiselle oppilaalle jaetaan vihkopakkaus, josta tulee oppikirja kuten aikaisemmin olenkin kertonut. Kirjoittamalla ja piirtämällä oppii oivasti:)

At the beginning of the school year, every pupil will receive a notebook package, which will turn into a learning book as I have earlier explained. By writing and drawing one learns splendidly :)

                                             

Meillä oli aika hauskaa 😅

We had much fun.

Maanantaina mennään toiseen kouluun. Olemme tiivistäneet neljän koulun oppilaat kahteen kouluun ja näin meillä on nyt yhteensä neljä opettajaa. He opettavat kaikkia oppilaita ikäänkuin kiertäen molemmalla koululla. 

On Monday we will visit another school. We have squeezed the pupils of four schools into two and so now we have altogether four teachers. They teach all children by rotating both schools.

Silmälasejakin kylän väki kysyi ja samalla siinä koulun aloituksen ohessa niitä sitten soviteltiin ja moni lähti hymyssä suin kotiin; osa halasi kiitokseksi, osa antoi poskisuukon ja osa kätteli. 

The people in the village were asking for glasses and, at the same time with starting the school year, people were fitting them and many returned home with a smile; some hugged for thanks, some gave a kiss on the cheek, some shaked hands.

Vuosi vaihtuu The Turn of the Year

Vuosi vaihtui täällä lämpimässä 3,5 tuntia pohjolaa aiemmin. Perheet olivat ihan pienimpienkin kanssa ihailemassa valoshowta ja erilaisia esityksiä rannalla. Sadetta ei onneksi tullut,vaikka ensin niin ennustettiin.

Koulut alkavat huomenna 2.1. (Valtion koulut sekä Iltapäiväkoulut,kuten Telluschool) ja tänä iltana kodeissa laitellaan koululaisten vaatteet valmiiksi, hiuksia on siistitty ja reput pakattu.

Telluschoolin tiimoilta hankimme vihkoja ja muita tarvikkeita. Ensin kuitenkin pitää odottaa, että ennen tänne tuloa lähettämäni joulukuun lahjoitussumma saapuu pankin kautta...joulunpyhät viivästyttivät niitä aikalailla.

Toivomme kaikille oikein hyvää ja onnellista uutta vuotta 2020!

Here in the warmth, the year is changing 3.5 hours earlier than in the North. Families with even the smallest ones were admiring the light show and various presentations on the beach. Fortunately, there was no rain although it was forecast earlier.

Schools will start tomorrow on 2 January (state schools and afternoon schools, like Telluschool), and tonight at homes arrangments are made for putting pupils' clothes ready, making hairs tidy and packing backpacks.

For Telluschool, we will acquire notebooks and other supplies. But first we have to wait for the December donation sum which I sent before leaving here to arrive through the bank...Christmas holidays delayed it quite a lot.
