Vapaaehtoistyö Telluschoolissa Voluntary work in Telluschool

Vietimme vapaaehtoistyön merkeissä kuukauden Telluschoolissa maaliskuusta huhtikuuhun. Kuukauden aikana koimme paljon. Asuimme paikallisessa Kumaran perheessä kuukauden ajan, jonka myötä pääsimme tutustumaan paikalliseen elämään, näkemään ja kokemaan. Saimme olla Dulini-äidin täyshoidossa. Nauttia paikallisesta hyvästä ruoasta, oppia tekemään paikallista  ruokaa, joka oli todella hyvää. Iso kiitos meidän `ammalle`. 

Opetusta oli joka arkipäivä noin kaksi tuntia. Lapset tulivat koulun jälkeen iltapäiväksi opiskelemaan englantia meidän oppeihin.  Opetimme sitä laulujen, leikkien ja kielioppien avulla. Meitä oli kolme opettajaa, joten jaoimme lapset ryhmiin iän ja englannin kielitaidon mukaan, jotta saataisiin opetus mahdollisimman tehokkaaksi. Tämä osoittautui hyväksi ideaksi, sillä useimpina päivinä kouluun saapui n. 30 lasta. 

Lisäksi kävimme myös vierailemassa ja opettamassa englantia Reijjapuran koulussa, jossa lapset olivat nuorempia iältään 2-4- vuotiaita.

Kuukauden aikana lapsiin ehti kiintyä nopeasti. Monena päivänä jäimme koulun jälkeen lasten kanssa leikkimään. Opetimme heille suomalaisia leikkejä, kirkon rottaa ja pistettä.
 

Saimme Suomesta lahjoittajilta silmälaseja n.120 kappaletta, kävimme muutamana päivänä niitä jakamassa köyhien kylien ihmisille. Lisäksi saimme kouluun lapsille viivoittimia, kyniä, papereita sekä  vesivärejä. Lämmin kiitos kaikille lahjoittajille! 

Kokemuksena kuukausi oli todella mahtava ja muistorikas. Lapset olivat todella ihania. Ruoka oli hyvää ja Kumaran perhe ihana.

We spent a month in voluntary work in Telluschool from March to April. During this month we had many experiences. We stayed at the local Kumara family where we got to know local life, to see and experience things. We enjoyed mother Dulini’s full board and were given the opportunity of having a taste of local, good food and learning how to cook local dishes, which were really tasty. Our warmest thanks to our ‘amma’.

Teaching sessions lasted about two hours every weekday. After school, the children came to learn English under our guidance in the afternoons. We taught it with songs, plays and grammar. There were three teachers of us, and so we divided the children into groups according to their age and English skill in order to make the teaching as efficient as possible. This proved to be a good idea as in most days as many as 30 children came to school.

In addition, we also visited and taught English at the Reijjapura school where the children were younger, 2-4 years of age. During the month, we became attached to the children quickly. On many days, we stayed behind after school to play with the children. We taught them Finnish children’s games, ‘kirkon rotta’ and ‘piste’.

From Finnish donors we had received about 120 glasses which we distributed to people in poor villages during a few days. Also, we had received rulers, pencils, papers and watercolours for the schoolchildren. The warmest thanks to all donors! The month was a truly amazing experience and full of memories. The children were really wonderful. The food was delicious and the Kumara family lovely. Let the photos speak for themselves:)

Koulu Boossan kylässä, jossa opetimme lapsille englantia. Koulun jälkeinen leikkituokio lasten kanssa oli aina yhtä mukavaa. The after-school playing session with the children was always very nice. Eläinten opiskelua korttipelin avulla. Learning animals with the card game. Uusilla kynillä kelpaa kirjoitella. It is easy to write with new pens. Kyllä hymyilyttää,kun on ikioma viivoitin.  A ruler of your own makes you smile.  ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤  Silmälasien jakotilaisuus temppelillä alkamassa. The glass distribution session is about to start at the temple.   Lasien sovittelussa, jotta jokaiselle löytyisi oikeat... Trying on glasses to find the right ones… Sanomalehtien avulla kokeiltiin, millä laseilla näkee lukea. Niinpä jokaiselle löytyi sopivat. Using newspapers one tried to find the best pair to see. Thus, everyone found the correct ones.    Nyt näkee lukea. Now I can see to read. Sopivien lasien löydyttyä oli helppo hymyillä:) After finding the proper glasses, it was easy to smile:) Tärkeintä on, että nyt näkee. The most important thing is that now one can see.  Oli ilo nähdä miten saimme silmälasit jaettua niitä tarvitseville. It was a joy to see how we managed to give glasses to those in need. ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤  Viimeisenä päivänä veimme lapset Gallen kaupunkiin. Kävimme uimassa sekä söimme eväät uimarannalla ja annoimme lapsille pienet pussukat, joissa oli kyniä, pyyhekumit, viivottimet, teroittimet ja vähän namia.  On the last day we took the children to the town of Galle. We went swimming and ate packed lunch on the beach and gave small bags including pencils, rubbers, rulers, sharpeners and some sweets to the children. Matkaan lähdettiin tällä menopelillä, kovin pitkälle ei kuitenkaan päästy, kun rengas puhkesi ja loppumatkan taitoimme tuktukilla. Tässä kyydissä meitä taisi olla noin parikymmentä henkilöä :D We started our journey with this vehicle but did not make it very far when the tyre punctured and the rest of the journey we carried on with a tuktuk. There must have been about twenty people on board :D Loppumatka menikin näin, meitä taisi olla 12 henkeä tuktukissa :D The rest of the journey went like this, perhaps 12 people in a tuktuk :D Gallen uimarannalla. On the Galle beach. Päivä oli lämmin ja aurinkoinen. It was a warm and sunny day. Lapset nauttivat, osa heistä ei ollut koskaan päässyt uimarannalle. The children were enjoying themselves, some of them had never been on the bathing beach. Uimakilpailu meneillään. A swimming competition is going on. Uinnin jälkeen ruoka maistui.  After the swim, we ate with a good appetite. Saimme osan lasten äideistä mukaan rannalle, sillä lapsia oli muutama kymmenen, niin lisäsilmäparit olivat todella tarpeen. Some of the children’s mothers were able to join us to the beach and as there were tens of children, we could do with extra pairs of eyes. <3 Jokainen sai retken lopuksi yllätyspussin opettajilta. Everybody received a surprise bag from the teacher at the end of the trip.  Päivä oli todella mukava ja onnistunut! The day was really nice and successful. ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤  Saimme olla mukana buddhalaisissa häissä, kun Boossan koulun opettaja Sashima meni naimisiin. We had an opportunity to attend a Buddhist wedding when the Boossa school’s teacher, Sashima, got married.  Telluschoolin opet ja oppilaat.  The teachers and pupils of Telluschool.   Dulini-äidin tekemiä ruokia kaipaa edelleen joka päivä, niin hyviä:) We are still missing the food prepared by mother Dulini every day, so good:)  Kumaran perhe ja opet.
