Always look out in traffic…
Sri Lankassa huolehditaan hyvin lasten kyydityksestä ja saattamisesta kouluun. Kävelymatkan päässä olevaan opinahjoon mennessä on yleensä äiti tai joskus isäkin saattamassa lastaan mennen ja tullen. Olenpa minäkin päässyt siihen tehtävään ystäväperheemme lapsia saattamaan:)
Pitemmät koulumatkat taittuvat tuktukeilla, ihan kuin meillä täällä Suomessa koulutakseilla. Sekään ei ole ihan halpaa niille köyhimmille, vaikka hinta on suomalaisittain toooodella edullinen lasta kohti. Joskus lapsia kuljetetaan myös mopolla, useampaakin kerralla ja siinä samalla on äitikin saattanut päästä kauppareissulle.
Telluschoolissa käy kylän omat lapset, joten perheiden ei tarvitse käyttää vähäisiä rahojaan koulukyyteihin kun matkat ovat lyhyet.
Kun vanhemmat tuovat lapsensa tähän kouluun, he odottavat oppituntien ajan koulun pihassa tai käväisevät asioilla sillä aikaa. Olen ehdottanut yhtenä ideana, että vanhemmat voisivat olla esim. kerran viikossa lastensa kanssa tai ilman lapsia opiskelemassa englannin kieltä ja näin itsekin voisivat oppia uutta.
Tässä olisi erittäin hyvä ja kannatettava tilaisuus esim. meille suomalaisille vapaaehtoistyöhön haluaville. Ehkä alankin suunnittelemaan asian kehittelemistä...
In Sri Lanka, parents take good care of transporting and bringing their children to school. When the school is at a walking distance, it is usually the mother, or sometimes the father, who accompanies the child both ways. Even I have had the privilege to accompany the children of our host family☺. Longer school trips are made by tuk-tuks, just like by school taxis here in Finland. Nevertheless, it is not very cheap for those with fewer means, although the fee by Finnish standards is veeeeery cheap per child. Sometimes a moped is also used to transport children, even more than one, and the mother, too, may get to the shops at the same time.
In Telluschool, the pupils are the village’s own children so there is no need for families to spend their money on school transport as the distances are short. When parents take their children to this school, they wait at the school yard during lessons. I have suggested that, perhaps once a week, the parents could attend the English lesson together with their children or without them and thus they themselves could learn something new. This would be a very good opportunity, for example, for us Finns who want to do voluntary work. Maybe I start planning the development of this idea…

Lapset ovat tärkeitä Sri Lankassa. Usein isovanhemmat hoitavat työnsä ohessa lastenlapsiaan. Sitten myöhemmin kenties päinvastoin.
Children are important in Sri Lanka. Often grandparents look after their grandchildren while working. Then later, it may happen vice versa.
Lapset ovat paljon vanhempiensa sylissä. En ole matkoillani nähnyt kertaakaan esim. lastenvaunuja tai -rattaita, vaan lapset ovat sylissä tai sitten kävelevät itse vanhemman kädestä kiinni pitäen. Ihan vastasyntyneetkin kuljetetaan sylissä peitteeseen huolellisesti käärittynä neulepipo tiukasti päässä, korvia suojaamassa kai...
Children often sit on their parent’s lap. During my trips I have never seen, for example, prams or pushchairs but the children sit on the lap or walk holding their parent’s hand. Even new-borns are carried in the lap carefully wrapped in a blanket, a knitted cap tightly in the head, I suppose to protect the ears…

Helteisimpinä päivinä aamupäiväkoulun oppilaat opettajiensa kanssa saattavat tulla rannalle vilvoittelemaan ja siinä ei ole niin vaarallista, vaikka vaatteetkin kastuisivat. Aurinko ja tuuli kuivattavat ne pian.
During the hottest days the pupils of the morning school may come to the beach together with their teacher to cool off, and it is not so dangerous if clothes get wet. The sun and wind will soon dry them.
Jos perheellä ei ole varaa laittaa lastansa maksulliseen iltapäiväkouluun, saatetaan heidät laittaa töihin, omaksi avuksi tai muuten. Työn tekeminen on toki hyvä oppia, mutta jos se tehdään koulunkäynnin sijasta, on tarkoitus huono. Siksipä onkin tärkeää saada lisää maksuttomia kouluja, että lapsilla olisi mahdollisuus tehdä sitä, mitä lasten kuuluukin: oppia uusia asioita ja uutta kieltä.
If the family cannot afford to send their child to the fee-charging afternoon school, the children may be put to work, to help the family or otherwise. Of course, it is good to learn to work but if it is done instead of going to school, it does not serve the purpose. Therefore, it is important to have more free schools so that the children would have the opportunity to do what they are supposed to do: learn new things and a new language.

Koululaiset ovat joka puolella maailmaa hyvin samanlaisia, iloisia kavereista ja yleensäkin etuoikeudestaan käydä koulua. Sen mahdollisuuden soisi todellakin ihan jokaiselle lapselle!
Schoolchildren are very much alike all over the world: happy about their friends and, in general, their privilege to go to school. One truly wishes that every child would have this opportunity!
Tässäpä reipas joukko opettajansa kanssa. Lapsista ei huomaa, onko joku varakkaampi vai ei, koska kukaan ei voi koulussa ainakaan vaatteillaan koreilla. Eri alueilla on oman värisensä asut : poikien kravatit, tyttöjen lettinauhat, shortsit/pitkäthousut ja hameet. Pusero on lähes joka alueella valkoinen. Siistiä, eikö totta!
What a cheerful bunch together with their teacher. It is not possible to see from the children whether one is richer than the other because nobody can show off with their clothes. Different regions have their own colours for outfits: boys’ ties, girls’ hair ribbons, shorts/trousers and skirts. The shirt or blouse is white in almost every region. Neat, don’t you think!

Kiinnitin huomioni sellaiseen seikkaan, että lapset eivät valittaneet, vaikka koulu kesti iltakuuteen saakka. Tottakai lapset väsyvät välillä sielläkin, mutta kun mietin, mitä suomalaislapset sanoisivat tällaisesta järjestelystä...tai vanhemmat...No, eri maa, eri tavat ja käytänteet...
Happy schoolchildren during the break between morning and afternoon studies☺. What drew my attention was that the children did not complain although the school lasted until six p.m.. Naturally, the children got tired there, too, but when I think about what Finnish children would say about this kind of arrangement...or the parents…Well, a different country, different habits and practices…

Aamulla ennen viittä, siitäpä sitten kouluun...Sri Lankassa herätään todella aikaisin.
Kurpitsan paloittelua aamupalalle, joka on klo 10-11 aikaan. Aamulla herättyä juodaan makeaa teetä maidon kera ja syödään ehkä pari keksiä.
Before five a.m., then going to school…People wake up really early in Sri Lanka. Chopping pumpkin for breakfast, which is at 10-11 a.m. In the morning when one wakes up it is common to have sweet tea with milk and perhaps a couple of biscuits.

Tapasin aikuisia myös sillä matkallani ja eka kertaa eri maan kuurojen kanssa ei meinannut tulla juttelusta mitään...eikä kaikkien kanssa tullutkaan. Ainoastaan koulussa mukana ollut kuuro mies oli vähän matkustellut ja tavannut eri maiden viittovia ihmisiä. Hänen kanssaan oli hiukkasen helpompi tulla juttuun.
