100 reppua odottaa täyttämistään. Kylän väki ja Dilipin sukulaiset olivat oiva apu. Myös kaksi tanskalaista turistia olivat hommassa mukana.

 

A 100 schoolbags are waiting to be filled. The people in the village and Dilip's relatives were an excellent help. Two Danish tourists were also involved in the activity.

Vihkoja kuljetettiin paikalle Rathgaman kylään skootterin kyydissä.

Exercise books were transported to the Rathgama village by a scooter.

Vihkoja oli monenvärisiä ja eri luokka-asteille erilaisia; pienemmille väljemmällä viivoituksella ja isommille tiuhemmalla viivoituksella. Vihkojen hinnat, kuten kaiken muunkin, ovat kivunneet roimasti ylöspäin, noin  kolminkertaiseksi, nyt 80snt ja isommat enemmän.

Näistä vihkoista jokainen oppilas luo oman oppikirjansa ja niinhän se on, että itse kirjoittamalla ja jopa piirtämällä oppi tarttuu paremmin.

The exercise books came in a great range of colours and forms for different class levels: for smaller pupils lines printed wider and, for bigger pupils, closer. Like everything else, exercise book prices have gone up drastically, about threefold, now being 80snt and bigger ones more.

Using these exercise books, each pupil will create his or her own textbook, and it is true that when you are writing or even drawing by yourself, learning becomes easier.

Jono oli pitkä kun reppuja jaettiin. Kaikki saajat kirjattiin ylös luokka-asteineen ja muine tietoineen.

There was a long queue when bags were distributed. All recipients were recorded with their grade and other information.

 

Intoa hihkuen odotettiin koulupäivän alkua.

Ensimmäisessä ryhmässä oli lapsia paikalla 52. Toinen opettaja on tulossa tämän,  ammatiltaan englanninkielen opettajan lisäksi.

In the first group there were 52 children present. Another teacher will join the team in addition to this English teacher.

 

 Koulureppujen painotyön tehnyt kaverimme tupsahti liikenteessä vierellemme ja saimme siinä samalla tilattua muutaman lisärepun lapsille, jotka eivät päässeet jakotilaisuudessa paikalle. Yhteistyöllä se sujuu :)

The fellow who carried out the printing work of our bags turned up beside us in the traffic, and so we managed to order a few additional bags for the children who could not come to the distribution occasion. By team-work things run smoothly :)

Kesä talven keskellä Summer in the Depth of Winter

Pohjolassa lumen keskellä on mukava ajatella, että muutaman viikon päästä matkustaa kouluja ja kesää katsastamaan.

Koronavuosien takia on ollut pitempi tauko matkoissa sinne kauas, mutta yhteydet puhelimitse ovat olleet sitäkin tiuhempia.

Koulujen lukuvuoden vaihtuminen on takana ja oppilaat ahkeroivat taas. Seuraava pikku loma on huhtikuussa, kun koittaa maan oma uusi vuosi.

Viime viikolla saatiin hankittua 100 reppua ja muita koulutarvikkeita uuden kouluvuoden alkajaisiksi. Yksi reppu oli maksanut 2350 Lr eli noin 5-6€. Hinta on noussut huimasti kuten kaikki muutkin hinnat. Aiempina vuosina (ennen koronaa) reppu maksoi noin2-3€.

Here in the North, in the middle of snow, it is nice to think that, after a few weeks, I will travel to see how the schools are doing and to get a taste of summer.

 Due to the corona years, there has been a longer gap in travelling there, far away, but contacts by phone have been ever more frequent.

 The turn of the school year is behind and the pupils are working hard at school. The next short holiday is in April when the country's own New Year is at hand.

 Last week we managed to get a 100 schoolbags and other school supplies for the start of the new school year. One bag cost 2350  Lr, i.e. about 5-6 €. The price has gone up drastically as have all the other prices. In earlier years (before corona) one bag cost about 2-3 €.

Sadekauden rankkasateet Heavy Rains of the Monsoon Season

On sadekauden aika. 

Kun vettä tulee taivaalta päivä ja viikko toisensa perään, niin kulkeminen ja kaikki elämä vaikeutuu. Koulunkäynti estyy, kun oppilaidemme perheiden kotikylissä liikenne eli tuk-tukeilla ajaminen, ei toimi veden paljouden takia.

Viljelykset, isommat pellot ja pienemmät kotipuutarhat, pilaantuvat ja näin myös ruuan saanti takkuilee. Korona ja maan talouskriisit ovat muutenkin jo vaikuttaneet näihin asioihin. 

It is the time of the rainy season.

When water is pouring down from the sky day after day and week after week, walking and life in general becomes difficult. Going to school is impossible when traffic, i.e. riding in tuktuks, in the home villages of our pupils' families does not work because of the heavy rainfall. Crops, larger fields and smaller home gardens get damaged and, thus, there will be shortages of food. The coronavirus and the country's economic crises have already affected these matters.

Lämpö ja sateet aiheuttavat myös tauteja ja kaikenlaista flunssaa on liikkeellä. Kun me eurooppalaiset haluamme siellä lämpimässä helteen keskellä

 sateen tullessa viilennystä ja seisomme sateessa, meitä varoitellaan vilustumisesta ja sairastumisesta. Meitähän se ihmetyttää kovin. Mutta totta se on, tauti tulee silloin helpommin, bakteerit alkavat jyllätä.

Heat and rains also cause diseases, and all types of flu are going around. When we Europeans are there in the heat and want some relief from it by standing in the rain, we are being warned against catching cold and becoming ill. And this surprises us so much. Nevertheless, it is true that you catch an illness more easily then, germs start spreading around.

Ei voi kuin toivoa aurinkoa ja sateen hellittämistä, elämän helpotusta ainakin siltä osin muutenkin vaikeiden aikojen jälkeen.

Tilanne rauhoittunut Calmer Days

 

Presidentti on vaihtunut ja mielenosoitukset on vaiennettu.  Mutta tietenkin edelleen taloudellinen kurimus vaivaa maata sekä yhteisö- että yksilötasolla. Polttoainetta on tarjolla ajoneuvoihin, mutta se maksaa niin paljon, että monellakaan ei ole siihen varaa... koska ei ole työtä.  Ruokaa tarvitsevat kaikki ja siinä on käytettävä mielikuvitusta ja harkittava tarkkaan, että saa hankittua tarvitsemansa.  Pihoissa ja muuten luonnossa kasvavat kookokset, papaijat, banaanit, chilit sun muut luonnon antimet ja yrtit auttavat ruuan hankinnassa. Työtilanne on kyllä hiukkasen parantunut, mutta vielä on paljon ongelmia, ennen kuin tilanne alkaa oikeasti palautua.

Kuten muissakin maissa koronaa on yhä, onneksi sentään lievempänä, mutta sitä vastoin sitä on taas enemmän. Se aina välillä katkaisee koulunkin toiminnan hetkeksi, mutta onneksi lapsilla riittää intoa niihin päiviin, kun koulua voi käydä.

The president has been replaced and protests have been silenced. But, of course, the country is still strained by the economic misery, both on the community and individual level. Fuel is available for vehicles but it costs so much that not many can afford it … because there is no work. Everybody needs food and you must use your imagination and think carefully how to get everything you need. Coconuts, papayas, bananas, chilies and other gifts of nature growing on yards or naturally help in acquiring food. The employment situation has improved slightly, but there are still a lot of problems before the situation will really be restored. As in other countries, there are still corona cases, fortunately milder ones, but in higher numbers. It occasionally prevents the school from operating for a while, but luckily children have energy for those days when they can go to school.

Also, the food aid provided for our village's old people's home brought much joy and warm thoughts on both sides 💓

 

Tällä kertaa tarjolla on riisiä, yrttihakkelusta, linssicurrya (sambol), pappadamia ja tonnikalaa. Vanhukset itse osallistuvat voimiensa mukaan ruuan valmistukseen.

This time the meal consists of rice, chopped herbs, lentil curry (sambol), pappadam and tunafish. The old people themselves take part in preparing the food, each according to one's strength.
