Going to school in Boossa in December 2015

Oppilaiden kielenkehitystä seurataan säännöllisesti testeillä.

The pupils’ language development is followed by regular tests.

Aina opiskelun lopuksi kokoonnuttiin hetkeksi pihalle laulamaan ja leikkimään - tietenkin pääasiassa englannin kielellä. Suomeksikin sujui esimerkiksi "Hämähämähäkki", "Etana Elli" ja ainakin numerot jo aika pitkälle.

Sri Lankan väelle on jostain syystä helppoa lausua suomen kieltä, se tulee aika helposti ja melko puhtaasti heiltä. Joskus myös heidän oma kielensä sinhala kuulostaa kuin sanoisivat jotain suomeksi. Useammankin kerran piti kääntää päätä ja kuunnella tarkemmin ihan vaikka katuvilinässä.

At the end of the learning session children always gathered in the playground to sing and play – mostly in English, of course. Finnish was also used, e.g. “Hämähämähäkki”, “Etana Elli”, and quite many numbers were counted in Finnish, too.

For some reason, it is easy for Sri Lankans to pronounce Finnish, it comes quite easily and fairly naturally. Sometimes their own language, Sinhalese, sounds like they were saying something in Finnish. More than once, I had to turn my head and listen more carefully, for example, among the crowds in the street.

Tämä tyttö on 4v. ja juuri aloittanut opintonsa. Vähän näytti olevan vaikeaa paikallaan pysyminen :)

The smallest pupils were instructed step by step. This girl is four years old and has just started school. It seemed a little difficult to keep still☺

Australialaiset Lesley ja tyttärensä Sarah olivat vieraina koululla ja osallistuivat myös opetukseen. Oppilaat olivat oikein innostuneita.

Lesley toimii Dubaissa kansainvälisen koulun rehtorina ja oli kovasti kiinnostunut kertomaan koulustamme myös omalla työpaikallaan ja hankkimaan jonkunlaista tukea toimintaamme. Sarah puolestaan jo suunnitteli tulevansa vapaaehtoisena opetustyöhön koululle.

Vapaaehtoistyötä juuri opetukseen tarvitsemmekin kevään aikana yhä enemmän!!!

The Australians, Lesley and her daughter Sarah, were visiting the school and also participated in teaching. The pupils were very interested. Lesley works as a headmaster in the international school in Dubai and was very keen on giving information about our school at her workplace and getting some sort of support to our operation. Sarah for her part was already planning to come as a voluntary teacher to our school. Voluntary work in the form of teaching is just what we need, more and more, in the spring!!

Sain olla vieraana Rejjapuran kylän väliaikaisen koulun päätösjuhlassa.

Sri lankassa  kouluvuosi vaihtuu vuoden lopussa toisin kuin meillä.

Juhlassa oli paljon lasten ohjelmaa ja sitten tietysti aikuisten puheita. 

I had a chance to be a guest at the school year-end celebration of the temporary school in the Rejjapura village. In Sri Lanka, the school year changes at the end of the year, unlike in Finland. At the celebration there were many programmes made by the children and then, of course, speeches by the adults.

 Kuvassa harmaahiuksinen jo eläkkeellä oleva opettaja, joka piti kauniin puheen ja kannusti vanhempia tukemaan lastensa koulunkäyntiä.

This photo shows a grey-haired teacher, already retired, who made a beautiful speech and encouraged parents to support their children in going to school.

Juhlassa nähtiin monenlaista ohjelmaa ja lukuisia erilaisia rooliasuja. Oli musiikkia, tanssia, laulua, runoja ja pieniä näytelmiä.

Kaikki ohjelmat valaisivat ja kunnioittivat jollakin lailla Sri Lankan värikästä kansaa ja kulttuuria.

There were many kinds of performances, including music, dancing, singing, poems and short plays, at the celebration and various role costumes. All performances somehow showed and respected the colourful nation and culture of Sri Lanka.

 Värien runsautta ei voi lakata ihailemasta.

One cannot stop admiring the abundance of colours.

 Jo vain kunnon juhlissa pitää olla kuplakone :)

Rooleja varten oli oma tila "ehostukseen" ja rooliasujen vaihtoon. Vanhemmat (äidit) olivat aktiivisesti mukana auttamassa.

Juhlassa oli mukana myös eräs herra ministeriöstä. Hän halusi tulla paikalle ja kertoikin uudesta Telluschool-koulusta, joka aloittaa toimintansa tammikuun alkupuolella juuri tässä Rejjipuran kylässä. Nämä paikalla olleet oppilaat jatkavat/aloittavat sitten siellä opintojansa ja yhä useammalla on mahdollisuus päästä kouluun.

For the roles, there was a separate space for “make-up” and changing of costumes. The parents (mothers) were actively involved in helping. 

At the party, there was also one gentleman from the ministry. He wanted to be present at the occasion and told people about the new Telluschool, which will start its operations right here in the village of Rejjapura in early January. These pupils attending will then continue/start their school there, and more and more children will have an opportunity to go to school.

Supervising the building and keeping the construction site clean is under control ☺

Katon rakentaminen on jo hyvällä alulla; sen verran on sateet antaneet periksi, etteivät tarvikkeet ole märkänä.

Building the roof is now well under way; a convenient break in the rains has prevented the supplies getting wet.

Kärsivällisyyttä tarvitaan Patience is needed

Rejjapuran kylän koulun rakennustyö on viivästynyt runsaitten sateitten vuoksi, mutta pikkuhiljaa aletaan olla sadekauden suhteen voitolla ja työt päästään aloittamaan oikein urakalla.
Myös lahjoitusten suhteen on ollut aika hiljaista. Toki olemme erittäin kiitollisia kaikille, jotka kantavat kortensa kekoon. Kuukausilahjoittajia on useita ja se lämmittää mieltä kovin. Myös ne satunnaiset lahjoitukset auttavat kokoamaan niistä pienistä puroista sen voimallisen virran, joka saa asiaa eteenpäin.
Ja mikä kiire tässä valmiissa maailmassa on. Aikanaan, aikanaan...toivottavasti kuitenkin jouluna on tämän toisen koulun avajaiset :)

Patience is needed

The building of the Rejjapura village school has been delayed because of heavy rainfall, but we are slowly getting the better of the rains and can start working full speed.

Also, in terms of donations, it has been fairly quiet. Of course, we are very grateful for all those contributing. There are many monthly donors, which warms the mind very much. Occasional donations also help in collecting those small streams that make one, strong river to forward the matter. And what is the rush in this ready-made world? All in good time, all in good time…however, we hope to have the opening of the second school at Christmas☺

Dilip, vaimonsa Dulini ja heidän nuorin poikansa Wihanga seurasivat, mitä kesän 2015 vapaaehtoistyötekijät Amanda ja Herkko saivat  lasten kanssa aikaan :)

Telluschool’s host family from the village of Boossa in Sri Lanka sends their regards through these photos. Dilip, his wife Dulini and their youngest son Wihanga followed what the voluntary workers of  summer 2015, Amanda and Herkko with children, achieved.

Koulun toiminta on vilkasta ja oppilaat ovat ahkeria.

Näiden kuvien välityksellä saatte aistia sitä riemua, jota yhdessä tekeminen ja väreillä uuden luominen saa aikaan.

The operation of the school is active and the pupils are hard-working. Through these photos you can sense the joy of working together and creating something new with colours.

     First, it was necessary to make sketches and models...

Kookos on hyvin monikäyttöinen ja ekologinen luonnontuote. Ihan lopuksi se käy vaikka maalinsekoitusastiaksi vallan mainiosti.
The coconut is a very versatile and ecological natural product. Finally, it can well be used, for example, as a paint mixing dish.

Kuten kuvasta näkyy, lahjoituksia tulee eri maiden turisteilta usein materiaalien muodossa. Se on tärkeä seikka koulunkäynnin monipuolistamiselle ja jopa toteutumiselle. 

As you can see from the photo, donations from the tourists of different countries are often given in the form of materials. It is important in view of making the education more versatile and, even, for its realization.

Uuden koulun valmistumista odotellaan ja rahoitusta yritetään saada aikaan, että joulun tienoilla voitaisiin pitää avajaiset. Silloinhan on myös ensimmäisen koulun toinen vuosijuhla.

We are waiting for the completion of the new school and we are trying to get funding to arrange the opening around Christmas time. Then, we will also have the second anniversary of the first school.
