Lunta ja riisinkasvatusta. Snow and Rice Growing

On taas se aika vuodesta, kun lumiset maisemat vaihtuvat hetkeksi riisipellon näkymiin. 

Sri Lankan koululaiset ovat parhaillaan "kesä"lomalla ja siirtyvät sen jälkeen tammikuun alkupuolella opinnoissaan seuraavalle luokalle.

Myös meidän koulumme oppilaat etenevät opinnoissaan hyvää vauhtia.

Once again, it is the time of the year when snowy scenes are changed into views over rice fields. Schoolchildren in Sri Lanka are on ”summer holiday” at the moment and will then pass on to the next grade in their studies at the beginning of January. The pupils in our school are also advancing in their studies at a good speed.

Tänä vuonna koululla ei pidetä suurempia juhlia, jotka aiemmin ovat olleet aivan upeita kokonaisuuksia esityksineen kaikkineen. Käytämme nyt enemmän varoja oppimateriaalien hankintaan ja jaamme niitä oppilaillemme heti lukuvuoden alussa. Näin sovimme paikallisten yhteistyötahojen kanssa jo viime vuodenvaihteessa.

This year we will not have any bigger parties which have earlier been magnificent overall spectacles with all the presentations. Instead, we will now use more funds to acquire learning materials and will distribute them to our pupils right at the beginning of the school year. This was already agreed with our local co-operation partners at the end of last year.

Monet ihanat ja ystävälliset ystävämme ovat olleet avuliaita ja antaneet tai jopa keränneet silmälaseja meille mukaan vietäväksi. Matkalaukut ovatkin aika täysiä, mutta paluumatkalla on sitten kevyt lasti :)

Our many lovely and kind friends have been helpful and have given or even collected eyeglasses for us to take over. Our suitcases are quite full, but on our return trip they will be very light :)

Silmälasiasiaa Eyeglasses Business

Hei!

Kun talvi on pikkuhiljaa tullut, muistuttelen teitä lukijoita taas "joulusiivouksesta".  No, ei nyt kuitenkaan sanan varsinaisessa merkityksessä, vaan muuten vain kaappien kätköjen kaivelua, josko sieltä löytyisi vanhaksi jääneitä, vielä ehjiä SILMÄLASEJA.

Matka Sri Lankaan lähestyy ja matkalaukut haluamme täyttää mahdollisimman paljon em. viemisillä.
Kaikki vahvuudet, värit ja mallit käyvät. Tällä hetkellä on kasassa noin 450 kpl rillejä; viime vuoden 800 kpl olisi tavoite;)

Now when the winter has slowly arrived I am reminding you readers once again about the ”Christmas clean-up”. Well, not quite literally, but if you would like to go through your closets and perhaps find old, unbroken GLASSES that have been put away.

The trip to Sri Lanka is approaching and we would like to fill the suitcases with the mentioned items as much as possible.

All forms of power, colours and models are suitable. At the moment, we have about 450 pieces of glasses; we are aiming at the 800 pieces of last year ;)

Globaalia toimintaa Global Action

Koulumme oppilaat ovat ottaneet pieneltä mutta tärkeältä osaltaan vastuuta myös luonnon paremman tulevaisuuden edistämiseksi.
Muun muassa vapaaehtoistyöntekijöillä ja koulussa vierailevilla turisteilla on ilmastonmuutos- ja luonnonelvyttämisasioissa tärkeä osa. Niinpä Rathgaman kylässä sijaitsevan koulumme lapset olivat iloisesti mukana siivoustalkoissa vierailijoiden innostamana.

Telluschool students have for their small but important part taken responsibility for promoting better future for nature.

Also, voluntary workers and tourists visiting our schools play an important part in the issues concerning climate change and restoring the natural environment. So, the children in our Rathgama village school were happy to take part in a cleaning operation encouraged by the visitors.

Meren rantaan ajautuu uskomaton määrä kaikenlaista roskaa, eikä suinkaan aina vain paikallisten jäljiltä.

Meressä on uskomaton määrä mm. muovia, aurinkorasvapulloista lähtien; kaiketi turistien jättämiä. Toki paikallisetkin roskaavat ja jättävät luonnon armoille mitä ihmeellisimpiä materiaaleja. 

Niin kuin kaikissa ilmastonmuutos-puheissa todetaan, vastuu on meillä jokaisella ja kaikki lähtee yksilöstä. Toisinaan se tuntuu ristiriitaiselta, koska suurvallat touhuavat omia saastuttavia touhujaan ihan eri mittakaavassa kuin yksilö. 

Mutta jokainen voi tehdä jotain, vaikka ihan vain pienesti.

An incredible amount of rubbish of all sorts is driven ashore and locals are by no means always to blame. There is an unbelievable amount of, for example, plastics in the sea, starting from sun lotion bottles; all left behind by tourists. Of course, locals also throw rubbish around and leave the strangest materials in the environment, letting nature to deal with it.

As is stated in all climate change speeches, we all have the responsibility and everything starts from an individual. However, sometimes it seems contradictory as the great powers busy themselves with their own polluting affairs on a completely different scale than the individual.

But, everyone has the ability to do something even though only on a small scale.

Vauhtia ja varsinaista kierrätystä! 

Roskat kerättiin jo moneen kertaan käytettyihin riisisäkkeihin...ja uskoisin, että säkit ovat edelleenkin käytössä.

Speed and proper recycling!

Rubbish was gathered to rice sacks that have already been used for many times...and I believe that they are still in use.

Työn jälkeen kuuluu saada palkka ja makea maistuu aina urakan jälkeen :)

Ja tietenkin opettajat, vanhemmat ja isovanhemmat, sisarukset ja serkut ovat työntouhussa mukana.

After work, one is entitled to a reward, and sweet things always taste good after a hard job :)

And, naturally, teachers, parents, grand parents, brothers, sisters and cousins are participating in the work.

Kesäinen tervehdys!

Telluschool on toiminut jo useita vuosia ja oppilaita on tullut kaiken aikaa lisää.

Meillä täällä Suomessa on tapana, että syntymäpäiväsankari saa lahjoja, mutta Sri Lankassa asia on päinvastoin. Päivänsankari itse antaa juhlapäivänään lahjoja läheisilleen ja ystävilleen varojensa ja mahdollisuuksiensa mukaan. Erittäin lämmin ja mukava tapa!

Itse täytän lähiaikoina "pyöreitä" vuosia ja haluaisinkin niissä merkeissä muistaa koulujamme ns. ylimääräisellä yllätyksellä.
Sri Lankassa kolmella jaolliset vuosijuhlat huomioidaan erityisesti ja kun oma juhlani kuuluu juuri tuohon joukkoon, tuntuu mukavalta ajatukselta lahjoittaa mahdollisesti kertyvät lahjat eteenpäin kouluillemme.

Summer greetings to you all!

Telluschool has been operating for several years now and more and more pupils are coming to our schools.

Here in Finland it is a custom to give presents to a person on his or her birthday, but in Sri Lanka it is the other way round. On birthday, the person concerned gives presents to his or her close family and friends within his or her means and possibilities. A very warm and nice custom!

I myself will reach the age of ”round” years in the near future and, on this occasion, I would like to remember our schools with an 'extra surprise'. In Sri Lanka, anniversaries divisible by three are given special attention, and as my own celebration belongs to that group, it seems a nice idea to donate any
presents received to our schools.

Koulurauhaa ja uutta toivoa School Peace and New Hope

Sadekausi on meneillään ja tuultakin riittää, mutta koulunkäynti jatkuu ja edistyy matematiikan ja englanninkielen opiskelun parissa.


The rainy season is currently on, accompanied with strong winds, but the schools are operating and progress is made in learning mathematics and English.

Tässä kolmen eriasteisen ryhmän opiskelua.

Here are three groups of different levels studying.

Turistit palailevat maahan ja paikallisilla on taas pikkuhiljaa töitä saatavilla. Sri Lankan kansa on sitkeää ja ahkeraa väkeä.

Tourists are returning to the country and locals will gradually have employment available. The people of Sri Lanka are a tough and hard-working nation.

Tilanne jo rauhallisempi The situation has calmed down somewhat

 Olemme olleet tiiviissä yhteydessä Sri Lankan ystäviimme ja tällä hetkellä tunnelmat maan asukkailla ovat vähän paremmat ja rauhallisemmat. Konkreettinen uhka on poistunut, mutta mielissä se pysyy vielä pitkään.
Valtion koulut ovat avanneet ovensa ja lapset saavat taas käydä koulua. Vanhemmat saattavat lapsensa, isommatkin, kouluun ja ovat jopa vartiossa koulun alueella poliisien apuna. Näin he luovat lastensa mieliin rauhan opiskella.
Telluschool on toiminut koko ajan tauotta ja jatkuu samalla tavalla.

We have been in close contact with our Sri Lankan friends and, at the moment, the residents of the country are in a better and calmer mood. The concrete threat has been removed, but in one's mind it will stay for a long time.

State schools have opened their doors and children can go to school again. Parents will accompany their children, even older ones, to school, and even keep guard in the school area, thus assisting police officers. In this way, they help their children to have a peaceful mind so that they can concentrate on studying.

Telluschool has been operating all the time without a break and will continue in the same way.

 

Oppilaiden taas lisääntyessä koulumme tarvitsee uusia kalusteita, koulupöytiä ja -penkkejä. Niinpä puutavaraa on hankittu ja Boossan kylän nuoret miehet tekevät kalusteet talkoilla. 

Kuvan takaosassa näkyy vanha penkki. Kalusteet ovat kovalla käytöllä ja ns. one size. 

While more and more pupils are coming to school, new furniture, school tables and benches are needed. Therefore, timber has been acquired and the Boossa village's young men have offered to make the furniture as neighbourly help. At the back of the picture there is an old bench. Furniture is in rough usage and is what is called 'one-size'.

Boossassa koulunkäyntiä ei haittaa ollenkaan, vaikka luokkahuoneen seinustalla on kuivumassa puumateriaalia kalusteita varten.
Valmiit kalusteet pitää myös käsitellä tarkoitukseen sopivalla aineella, etteivät tupajumit ja muut tuholaiset pääse murentamaan puuainesta.

In Boossa, learning has not been disturbed at all in spite of timber for the furniture being drying against the classroom wall.

Completed furniture must also be treated with a suitable substance in order to prevent furniture beetles and other pests from crumbling the wood.

Koulun seiniäkin maalataan, kunhan kalusteet saadaan tehtyä.
School walls will also be painted when the furniture has been completed.

Tähän aikaan vuodesta ilmasto saarella on hyvin kuuma ja tukala, yötä päivää. Sadetta on lähes päivittäin, mutta ei onneksi ihan kaatamalla ja koko päivää. Aurinko kuivattaa nopeasti sateen jäljet.
Toivottavasti tänä vuonna ei tule rankkasateita, mutavyöryjä eikä muita ääri-ilmiöitä. Näin viljelysato voisi olla riittävä ja antaisi elannon. Se auttaisi siinä, että ruokaa riittää, vaikka töitä on vähän kun turistit puuttuvat lähes kokonaan.

At this time of the year, the climate on the island is very hot and uncomfortable, night and day. It will rain almost every day but, fortunately, it will not be heavy and for the whole day. The sun will quickly dry the traces of rain.
Hopefully this year, there will not be heavy rains, mud slides and other extreme phenomena. Thus cultivation could give sufficient crops and provide livelihood. This would help to give enough food although there is little work while the tourists are missing almost entirely.
