One story resulting




Tervehdys virkeästä koulustamme kaukaa lämpimästä. On todella mielenkiintoista, miten ihan sattumanvaraisilta tuntuvat yhteydenotot tuottavat paljon iloa siellä ja täällä. Sattumanvaraiset...hmmm?!?

Tässä yksi tarina mukavan yhteydenoton seurauksena:


Jyväskyläläinen lääkäri Visa ja osa perheestänsä, vaimo ja kaksi aikuista lasta, olivat lähdössä Sri Lankaan lomailemaan. He halusivat käyttää lomastaan melkoisen osan vapaaehtoistyöhön koulullamme. 
Pidimme pikku palaveria ja mietimme yhdessä, miten olisi paras toimia. Olimme tietenkin tiiviisti yhteydessä koulusta huolta pitävään vastuuperheeseen.



Greetings from our lively school here faraway, in the warmth of Sri Lanka. It is really interesting how seemingly random contacts generate so much joy here and there. Random…hmmm?!?

Here is one story resulting from a pleasant contact:

Visa, a medical doctor from Jyväskylä, Finland, and part of his family (his wife and two grown-up children) were leaving for Sri Lanka for holidays. They wanted to spend the major part of their holidays on voluntary work at our school. We had a small meeting and discussed together what would be the best way to act. Of course, we were in close contact with the local family in charge of the school.

Muutaman päivän aikana Visa tarkasti lääketiedettä opiskelevan tyttärensä Emilian kanssa 95 lasta; koulumme oppilaita sekä heidän sisaruksiaan. 

Lapsista tehtiin tarkat potilaskortit, joista on varmasti hyötyä jatkossakin.
Oli kuulemma ollut hieman hankaluutta, kun kaikki vanhemmat eivät osanneet kirjoittaa lapsensa nimeä kuin sinhalaksi. No, isäntä-Dilip auttoi siinä ja homma saatiin hoidettua.

During a few days, Visa examined 95 children – pupils from our school and their brothers and sisters – together with his daughter Emilia, who is a medical student.

Detailed patient information cards were written of the children and, no doubt, they will be useful in future, too. We were told that it was a little bit difficult as some parents could write their child’s name only in Sinhalese. Well, master Dilip was very helpful and the task was completed.

Nuorin tarkastettava oli vasta 3 kk ikäinen.

The youngest child examined was only 3 months old.










Koulu jatkui tavalliseen tapaan tarkastusten kanssa rinnakkain ja jokainen odotti tarkastusvuoroaan innolla.

The school continued in the usual way during check-ups, and everyone was eagerly waiting for his or her turn to be examined.








Lapsia kiinnosti, mitä verhon takana tapahtui, niin että välillä heitä piti "hätistellä" kauemmas odottamaan omaa vuoroaan koulun penkille.

The children were so interested to see what was happening behind the curtain that they had to be “shooed” further off to the classroom to wait for their own turn.



Tarkastuksen jälkeen jokainen sai vihkon, kynän ja pyyhekumin. Se toi poikkeuksetta hymyn huulille :) Se on niin pienestä kiinni...siellä!

After the examination, every child was given an exercise book, a pencil and a rubber. It brought a smile without exceptionJ. It doesn’t take much…there!







Rejjapuran kylän uusi koulu valmistuu pikkuhiljaa.

The new school of the Rejjapura village is being completed gradually.







Visan vaimo Tuija ja poika Antti olivat myös opetuksessa mukana opettajan kanssa. Lapset oppivat mm. suomeksi lorun "Etana Elli kannolla kelli...". 
Aikaisemmin osa lapsista on jo oppunut luettelemaan suomeksi numerot 1...10.  Me vuorostamme opimme ne heidän kielellään eka, deka...
Ja tietenkin englannin kielen opettaminen on se pääasia; sitä lapset mielellään opiskelevatkin.

Visa’s wife Tuija and son Antti were also involved in teaching. For example, the children learned a Finnish nursery rhyme “Etana Elli kannolla kelli…” Earlier, some children have already learned to count from 1 to 10 in Finnish. We, in turn, learned eka, deka… in their language. And of course, learning English is the main thing, which the children are also happy to do.






Ihan näinä päivinä on koululla uusi suomalainen parivaljakko aloittamassa vapaaehtoistyöpätkää. Nuoripari, jolla on hyvin monipuolinen opinto/harrastetausta. Siitä on varmasti paljon iloa ja apua lapsille ja koko kyläyhteisölle. Ja tulevalle koulullekin. Jään innolla odottamaan uutisia!

During these very days, a new Finnish pair will be starting their voluntary work period. A young couple with a very versatile educational background and interests, which will surely be a lot of fun and help for the children and the whole village community. And for the future school, too. Looking forward to receiving news!

 And missing warm summer!!!!

Caring for Teeth

Finnish dental care professionals, Mirja and Vuokko, volunteered to help Telluschool’s children and their families with dental care and advice. Hurrah for cooperation! ☺

Vapaaehtoiset suomalaiset hammasalan ammattilaiset, Mirja ja Vuokko halusivat auttaa Telluschoolin koululaisten ja heidän perheidensä hampaidenhoidossa ja neuvonnassa.

Eläköön yhteistyö:)

Saksalainen pankkiiri (ja hänen käsityönopettaja-vaimonsa), joihin naiset tutustuivat sattumalta, halusivat tulla katsomaan kouluamme ja seurata hampaidentarkastusta.

A German banker (and his wife, a handicraft teacher), with whom the ladies got acquainted by chance, wanted to visit our school and follow dental check-ups.

                         Myös aikuiset olivat kovin kiinnostuneita tulemaan tarkastukseen.
Adults were also very keen on coming for a check-up.

                        Hampaiden tarkastus sai aikaan hymyn huulille, pelkoa ei juurikaan näkynyt.
                                   Tarkastuksen jälkeen jokainen sai uuden hammasharjan ja -tahnan.

The check-up brought a smile on every face, there was hardly any fear to be seen. After the check-up, everyone got a new toothbrush and a toothpaste.

 Vanhemmat saivat neuvontaa ja opetusta lasten ja tietysti omienkin hampaiden ja suun terveyden hoidossa.
Parents received advice and education on caring for their children’s as well as their own teeth and oral health.

Mirja ja Vuokko veivät mukanaan paljon erilaista tavaraa, kuten hammasharjoja, joita jaettiin lapsille ja perheille. Myös hoitotarvikkeet ja muut siihen liittyvät olivat heillä mukana.

Paikallinen kapteeni halusi lahjoittaa koululle hammastahnoja. Tässä oikein virallisluonteinen lahjoitustilaisuus.

Näin kasvaa paikallisten kiinnostus ja vastuunotto Telluschoolin kehittämisestä ja ylläpitämisestä Dilipin (kesk.) perheen lisäksi.

Lämmin kiitos Mirjalle ja Vuokolle arvokkaasta työstä.

Koululaisiahan riittäisi toki enemmänkin tässä maassa, mutta muistakaamme,

 että vähän on paljon!

Mirja and Vuokko brought a lot of various products with them, for example toothbrushes, which were handed to the children and families. They had also taken their treatment equipment and other necessities with them.

A local captain wanted to donate toothpastes to the school. Here is the official occasion of presenting the donation. This is how to increase awareness and responsibility of the locals for Telluschool’s development and maintenance in addition to Dilip’s (in the middle) family.

Of course, there would be plenty of schoolchildren in this country, but please remember that little is much!

Tässä jonkin sortin puimuri. Riisisato on kypsynyt ja satoa korjataan talteen. Läheskään kaikilla ei ole varaa koneeseen, vaan sato korjataan käsin sirpillä leikkaamalla. Riisi tuottaa satoa 3 kertaa vuodessa.
Maan sisäosissa vuodenvaihteessa oli niin kovat sateet, että sato tuhoutui täysin. Pellot olivat kuin yhtä järveä vaan, koko sato peittyi sen alle. Se on tuottanut monelle perheelle paljon ongelmia.

Here you can see some sort of a harvester. The rice crop is mature and is being harvested. Only a few can afford the machine, but harvesting is carried out manually by cutting with a sickle. Rice yields 3 crops a year.

In the inland parts of the country there was so heavy rainfall at the turn of the year that the crops were lost completely. Fields were like one big lake, all the crops underneath. It has caused many problems to many families.

Vähitellen alkaa koulun muoto hahmottua.

The school house is taking shape little by little.

Boossan kylän koulussa opiskellaan ahkerasti. 

Jotkut asiat on englannin tunnillakin tarkennettava ihan omalla kielellä, sinhalalla. 

Children are studying hard in the Boossa village school. In English lessons some matters still have to be clarified in their own language, Sinhalese.

Jossakin ryhmässä on väljempää, jossakin sitten taas vuorostaan istutaan ahtaammasti.

In some groups there is more space and in others pupils are sitting more closely.

Telluschool tukiyhdistys ry. piti vuosikokouksensa kuluneella viikolla, Iloksemme totesimme, että ihmisten kiinnostus koulua kohtaan on ollut runsasta ja lahjoittajiakin on tullut lisää. Yhdistyksen alkutaipaleen matkalta haluan välittää näin tässä lämpimät kiitokset tukijoillemme! Vain teidän ansiosta olemme saaneet nyt jo toisen koulumme alulleen Rejjapuran kylässä ja pystymme sitä jatkamaan 

Suomalaisia vierailijoita on käynyt tutustumassa kouluihin ja tässä kevään aikana on tarkoitus jatkaa terveydenhuoltoyhteistyön kehittämistä suomalaisten yksityishenkilöiden kanssa. 

The Telluschool Support Association had its annual meeting in the past week. We were happy to discover that there has been plenty of interest in the school and the number of donors has also increased. From the Association’s initial phase I wish to express our warmest thanks to our supporters! It is only thanks to you that we have been able to lay the foundations of our second school in the village of Rejjapura and are able to continue it. Finnish visitors have come to see the schools, and during this spring the aim is to continue the development of health care collaboration with Finnish private persons.

The new school

Uuden, Rejjapuran kylään tulevan toisen koulumme perustustyötä ja nousevaa seinää tässä muutamalla kuvalla:

Laastin teko on todella kätevän näköistä puuhaa, eri ainekset sekoittuvat hyvin ja nopeasti maassa miesten ja lapioiden tehdessä työtä.

Here you can see a few photos of the foundation work and the rising of a wall of our new, second school in the Rejjapura village.

Making mortar is a really handy job: different ingredients are mixed well and fast on the ground while the men and shovels are doing the job.

Ystävänpäivätervehdys

Toista Telluschool-koulua rakennetaan Rejjapuran kylään, noin 10 km päähän ensimmäisestä, reilu vuosi sitten rakennetusta koulusta.

Perustukset on valmiit ja seinät alkavat kohota pikkuhiljaa. Rakentaminen etenee lahjoitusvarojen karttumisen tahtiin. 

Alunperin koulusta oli tarkoitus tulla pienempi, mutta kylän runsaan lapsiluvun takia ja lahjoitusten turvin suunnittelimme kouluun myös toisen kerroksen, joka rakennetaan sitten, kun siihen on mahdollisuus.

Toiseen kerrokseen tulee keittiö ja ruokailutilaa, jossa lapsille voidaan tarjota vatsan täytettä.

Koulussa tulee toimimaan aamupäivisin tavallinen koulu ja iltapäivisin varattomille maksuton specialschool eli tilat tulevat olemaan täydessä käytössä ja ovat todella tarpeen tässä väkirikkaassa, syrjäisessä kylässä.

Olemme suunnitelleet suomalaisten ammattilaisten kanssa myös terveydenhoidollisia asioita kouluihin, osaksi ne ovat jo toteutuneetkin. 

Boossan kylässä olevassa koulussamme on jo tarkastettu oppilaiden hampaat ja annettu perheille hampaidenhoito-opetusta. Kiitos siitä kuuluu kahdelle tomeralle suomalaisnaiselle. Sydäntä lämmittää heidän auttavainen mielensä ja tehokas asialle omistautuminen.

Aikaansaavia ja positiivisia naisia!

The second Telluschool is under construction in the Rejjapura village, about 10 km away from the first one, which was built over a year ago. The foundations are ready and the walls will go up gradually. Building will progress at the pace of receiving donation funds. Originally, we planned a smaller school, but owing to the high number of children in the village and with the help of donations, we designed another floor to the school and it will be built when possible. The second floor will have a kitchen and a refectory where we can offer the children something to fill their bellies with.

In the mornings, the school will operate as ordinary school, and in the afternoons there will be free special school for children from poor families and, thus, the premises will be in full use and are really needed in this densely populated, distant village.

Together with Finnish professionals we have also planned health care issues for the schools, and some of them have already been carried out. In our school in the Boossa village pupils have had their teeth checked, and advice on dental care has been provided to the families, thanks to two, energetic Finnish ladies. Their helpful mind and efficient devotion to the cause warm my heart. Able and positive ladies!

Tässä yli vuoden vanha kuva Sri Lankalaisesta perheestämme. Juuri heidän pihassaan on ensimmäinen Telluschool-koulu (nurkka näkyykin tuossa oikealla). 
Kovin ovat muuttuneet kaikki tuosta kuvasta; lapset kasvaneet ja aikuisetkin osin toisen näköisiä :)
Perhe huolehtii koulun toiminnasta esimerkillisesti ja auttavat kaikin mahdollisin tavoin, että homma toimii.

Saan piakkoin tuoreita kuvia toisen koulun rakennustyömaalta...niitä odotellessa;)

Here is a photo of our Sri Lankan family, taken over a year ago. Actually, it is their home yard where the first Telluschool was set up (you can see the corner on the right). Everybody has changed a lot from that picture; the children have grown and even the adults look different☺. The family takes care of the school in an exemplary way and helps in every possible way to make things run smoothly.

I will soon receive recent photos from the building site of the second school…until then☺.
