 Nyt kuuluu huonoja uutisia sieltä kaukaa lämpimästä😞

Maa on taas mennyt kiinni, tällä kertaa talouskriisin takia. Ulkonaliikkumiskielto on voimassa koko maassa. 

Esimerkiksi kaasu on loppu, koska kaasulaivat kääntyvät satamasta takaisin purkamatta lastiaan, sillä maassa ei ole rahaa maksaa kaasusta. Sen lisäksi sähkö on poikki päivittäin jopa 13 tuntia.

Sanonta "Raha menee rahan luo" on täyttä totta tällä hetkellä siellä. Hallitus on yhden suvun hallinnassa ja raha pyörii siellä taskusta taskuun ja ulkomaisiin sijoituksiin, näin kertoi paikallinen poliitikon vaimo minulle. Hän kertoi saman kuin monet taloustieteilijät ajattelevat, että maan kriisiä ovat pahentaneet hallinnon virheet, vuosikausia jatkunut velkaantuminen sekä maan veroleikkaukset. Tällä hetkellä Sri Lankan hallitus kuitenkin neuvottelee Kansainvälisen valuuttarahaston kanssa pelastuspaketista, että maan tilanne saataisiin paremmalle tasolle ja kansalle ruokaa.

Ainoastaan valtiolla töissä olevat saavat palkkaa ja avustusta elatukseen sekä terveydenhuoltoon. Tavalliset kansalaiset kulkevat pitkiäkin matkoja löytääkseen yrttejä myytäväksi ja itse syötäväksi. Ulkonaliikkumiskiellon ja sähkökatkojen vuoksi kerättyjä tuotteita ei kuitenkaan voi myydä tai säilyttää viileässä myöhemmin myytäväksi.

Tässä muutama esimerkki ruuan hinnasta: (1€ on n. 200 LR =lankan rupia)

Hallitus on myynyt maata Kiinalle ja Intialle ja nyt kansalaisilla on pelko, että koko maa menee muiden omistukseen.

Myös lääkärikäynnit ja lääkemaksut tuottavat ongelmia. Mitään lääkkeitä ei voi ostaa kerralla ja hinnat yhä vain nousevat. Lääkkeitä syödään muutama päivä ja ollaan muutama päivä ilman, jolloin rahaa voi laittaa vähän ruokaan. Sitten taas arvataan ostaa muutaman päivän lääkkeet. Verenpaine, diabetes, rytmihäiriöt, astma...lääkäri sanoo, että pitää ottaa joka päivä lääkkeet, mutta jos rahaa ei ole niin ei ole.

Veden hinta ja puhelinmaksut ovat myös nousseet. Sosiaalinen media on suljettu, esim. Whats App ja Facebook. Maassa on mielenosoituksia ja ulkonaliikkumiskieltoa on uhmattu.

Maailmanlaajuinen pandemia sekä Ukrainassa vallitseva sotatila vaikuttavat ja pelottavat. Venäläiset ovat olleet merkittävä turistiryhmä Sri Lankassa ja heidän tuomat tulot ovat puuttuneet jo muutaman vuoden. Lisäksi yli kolmannes ulkomaan valuutasta on tullut siirtotyöläisten rahalähetyksistä. Yli puolet siirtotyöläisistä on ollut naisia.

Now we are receiving bad news from there far away, from the warmth😔

The country has gone into lockdown, this time as a result of an economic crisis.  A curfew has been imposed all over the country.

For example, the country has run out of gas because gas ships are turning back from the harbour without unloading their cargo as the country has no means to pay for the gas. In addition, electricity is cut off daily, even for more than 13 hours at a time.

The saying ”money goes to money” is so true there. The government is under the control of one family and money circulates from one pocket to another and to foreign investments, this was told me by a local politician's wife. She said the same what many economists have been thinking that the land's crisis has been made worse by the government mismanagement, indebtedness which has lasted for many years and the country's tax cuts. However, at the moment the Sri Lankan government is negotiating with the International Monetary Fund about a rescue package in order to improve the country's situation and provide food for the people.

Only those working for the state get paid and receive support for livelihood and health service. Ordinary citizens walk long distances in order to find herbs to sell and to feed themselves. Due to the curfew and power cuts it is impossible to sell the gathered products or keep them cool to be sold later.

 

Here are some examples of food prices: (1€ is about 200 LR =Lankan rupees)

One apple before 65 LR, now 200 LR

One egg before 12 LR, now 30 LR

Bananas kg (Lanka's own) before 50 LR, now 100 LR

Rice kg before 90 LR, now 200 LR

Milk powder 400 g, now 790 LR (substitute for milk)

 

The government has sold land to China and India and now the citizens are fearing that the whole country will go to the foreign ownership.

Also, going to the doctor and medicine costs are causing problems. None of the medicines can be bought at one go and prices are soaring. People are taking medicine for some days and then they are without them for a few days so that they can spend a little money for food. Then again, they may buy medicines for some days. Blood pressure, diabetes, arrhythmia, asthma...on doctor's orders you should take your medicine every day but if there is no money there is nothing to be done.

Water and phone charges have also gone up. Social media has been shut down, e.g.  WhatsApp and Facebook. There are protests in the country, in defiance of the curfew.

The world pandemic and Ukraine war have effects and cause fear. Russians have been a significant tourist group in Sri Lanka and the income they have brought has been missing for some years now. In addition, over one third of foreing currency has been gained from the money sent by migrant workers. More than half of the migrant workers have been women.

Vihdoin, VIHDOINKIN on päästy aloittamaan taas koulunkäynti. Oppilaita vanhempineen on tullut paikalle ja intoa riittää. Voimme vain toivoa, että pandemiatilanne pysyy rauhallisena ja koulunkäynti voi jatkua ilman taukoja.

At last, FINALLY, we have been able to open our school. Pupils with their parents have come to school, full of enthusiasm. We can only hope that the pandemic situation remains calm and schools can operate without breaks.

 

 Opiskelupaketti koulun aloitukseen jaettiin jokaiselle koululaiselle.

Koulua ei aloitettu vielä Dilipin perheen pihassa olevassa "pääkoulussamme", ettei perhe altistu, jos korona vielä leviäisi. Tämä Hikkaduwan kylässä sijaitseva tila on saatu käyttöön pieneltä kyläkoululta. Näin kukaan perhe ei ole muita enempää altistusvaarassa.

Koulun lähellä asuu Dilipin perheen vanhin tytär ja hän huolehtii, että kaikki sujuu asianmukaisesti ja että oppilaat sekä opettaja ovat säännöllisesti paikalla.

We did not open the ”main school” located in the yard of Dilip's family to prevent the family from being exposed to COVID-19, should it start spreading. These premises in the Hikkaduwa village have been given to our use by the small village school. Thus, none of the families is at higher risk of exposure.

The oldest daughter of Dilip's family is living near the school and is looking after that everything is done appopriately and both the pupils and teachers attend regularly.

Aina kannattaa toivoa! There is Always Room for Hope!

 

Vaikka Sri Lankan rannat ovat yhä melkoisen autioita, niin toivoa paremmasta on näkyvissä...ainakin toivomme ja uskomme niin👍

Paikallisten on ollut hyvä käyskennellä rannoilla ja siellä on riittänyt tilaa pitää myös turvavälit;) Tällä hetkellä maassa on jo jonkun verran turisteja, vaikka monet turisteja palvelevat paikat, esimerkiksi hotellit ja ravintolat, ovat vielä suurelta osin kiinni. Ehkäpä ns. reppureissaajat eivät niitä pääosin käytäkään.

Although Sri Lankan beaches are still quite deserted, there is hope for the better to be seen...at least we hope and believe so.

The locals have enjoyed strolling on the beaches and there has also been enough space for keeping safe distances ;) At the moment, there are some tourists in the country although many places serving tourists, e.g. hotels and restaurants, are mostly closed. But perhaps backpackers do not use them to a large extent.

Riisin uusi sato on kasvamassa ja kukkia on toki ympäri vuoden, kukin laji ajallaan.

A new rice crop is growing and, of course, flowers bloom throughout the year, each species in due time.

Myös koulujen avaaminen on alkanut ja hallitus paikallisten viranomaisten kanssa tarkkailee tilannetta koronan osalta hyvin herkästi.

Also, the opening of schools has started, and the government is monitoring the COVID-19 situation very closely together with the local authorities.

 

Viikon päästä on tarkoitus aloittaa Telluschool-koulujen toiminta pakollisen korona-tauon jälkeen. 

Saamiemme lahjoitusten turvin Dilip, koulujen "isä", hankkii tällä viikolla vihkoja, kirjoja, kyniä, kumeja ja muuta opiskelun kannalta tarpeellista. Sen jälkeen toivomme todella, että kaikki pysyvät terveinä ja toiminta saa jatkua.

Opettajatkin ovat jo kovasti halukkaita aloittamaan työnsä.

After a week, we intend to start the operations of the Telluschool schools after the compulsory corona break. 

Using the donations we have received Dilip, the ”father” of our schools, will get notebooks, books, pencils, rubbers and other things necessary for studies this week. After that, we really hope that all remain healthy and the operations can continue. Teachers are also very eager to start their work.

Ruoka on elinehto Food is the Necessity of Life

Sri Lankan ilmasto edesauttaa sitä, että läpi vuoden saa kerätä satoa puutarhasta. Eri  hedelmien kypsymisajat vaihtelevat ja esimerkiksi hyvänä vuonna saa riisistä kolme satoa. 

Nyt koronan kurimuksessakin perheen emännät keräävät pihoiltaan yrttejä ja muuta pientä myytävää, että saisivat rahaa perheen tarpeisiin.

Sri Lankan koronatilanne on vain niin huono, että ulkona liikkuminen on monesti kiellettyä eikä näin ollen voi mennä turuille ja toreille myymään tuotteitaan.

Koulut olivat auki hetken aikaa, mutta niin vain yhdellä oppilaalla olikin korona ja koko ryhmä joutui karanteeniin :(

 

Sri Lankan climate makes it possible to pick crops from the garden throughout the year. Various fruits have different ripening times and, for example, rice yields three crops in a good year.

Now, even in the maelstrom of corona, housewives gather herbs and any other small items to sell from their yards to get income for the family's needs. However, Sri Lanka's corona situation is so bad that moving outdoors is often forbidden and, therefore, one cannot go to the market to sell one's produce.

 Schools were open for a moment, but as it happened, one pupil was infected with the coronavirus and the whole group had to go into quarantine :( 

Siksipä autamme tässä asiassa aina kun vain saamme varoja kokoon. Joku paikallinen lainaa omaa autoaan jakoreissulle ja vapaaehtoiset auttavat riisin ja pääasiassa kasvisten jakelussa koronasuojautumisen huomioiden. Tämä tapahtuu silloin, kun kotipihan ulkopuolella on lupa liikkua.

Therefore, we will help in this matter whenever we are able to gather funds. One of the locals lends his car for the distribution round and volunteers help in the distribution of rice and mainly vegetables following corona protection measures. This operation takes place when one is allowed to move outside one's home yard.

Vasemmanpuoleinen herra asuu Dilipin perheen naapurissa Boossan kylässä. Hän on vuonna 2013 rakennetun, ensimmäisen koulumme ensimmäinen palkallinen rakennusmies.

The gentleman on the left lives next to Dilip's family in the Boossa village. He is the first hired builder of our first school, built in 2013.

And what's more, dear friends, we are still collecting glasses. Nobody knows when we can take them and visit our schools, but let's live in hopes of better times.

 

Apua koronaan jo saatavilla Relief for COVID-19 now available

• Sri Lankan koronatilanne on hiukkasen paranemaan päin ainakin siinä mielessä, että  ihan tavallisilla kansalaisilla on mahdollisuus saada rokotukset, ei vain rikkailla.

Toki kuolemia on vieläkin päivittäin satoja ja taas satoja ja rajoitukset ovat mittavia mm. ulkona liikkumisen suhteen. Juuri tänään alkoi uusi kymmenen päivä jakso, jolloin kotona on pysyttävä, ellei ole pätevää syytä poistua sieltä. Edellinen jakso loppui muutama päivä sitten. Alueellisia eroja voi toki olla.

Sri Lanka's corona situation is improving slightly, in the sense that ordinary citizens are able to have vaccines, not just the rich.

Nevertheless, there are still hundreds and hundreds of deaths daily and restrictions are large-scale, for example, regarding moving outdoors. Just today a new ten-day period started when you must stay at home unless you have a valid reason to leave the house. The previous period ended a couple of days ago. Of course, there may be regional differences.

Streets are still empty and there are hardly any people about in centres or side-streets.

Tänään Dilip, koulumme paikallisen isäntäperheen pää, oli saanut hankittua isot säkilliset vihanneksia jaettavaksi perheille. Jako tapahtuu aina poliisin allekirjoittamalla luvalla hyviä koronasuojauskäytänteitä noudattaen. 

Today Dilip, the head of our school's local family in charge, had managed to get big bags of vegetables to be distributed to families. Distribution is always organised with a permit signed by the police and following good corona protection practices.

Mukavana lisänä sain kuulla, että myös jotkut paikallisen, ns. sivulliset, olivat halunneet avustaa tässä asiassa, siis ihan konkreettisesti antamalla varoja ostoksiin💓

It was also nice to hear that some local people, 'outsiders', also wanted to help in this matter, i.e. in a concrete way by donating funds for buying food. It really warms the heart!

Huolta ja niukkuutta Worries and Scarcity

 Korona on levinnyt Sri Lankassa hurjasti ja siitä johtuvien päivittäisten tartuntojen sekä kuolemien määrä on ollut jatkuvassa nousussa. Maassa on ulkonaliikkumiskielto, jonka jakso voi olla muutaman viikon kerrallaan, vaihdellen maan eri osissa. Valtaosalla ihmisistä ei ole työtä, koska  kaikki paikat ovat suljettu uudelleen juuri alkaneen pienen toivonkipinän ilmaannuttua.

Ruuan hinta - kalan, kanan ja vihannesten sekä riisin- on noussut moninkertaiseksi ja näin ollen kaikilla ei ole riittävästi syötävää. 

Tällä hetkellä annamme apuamme pääasiassa edelleenkin ruuan muodossa ja sen mahdollistatte te, ihanat lahjoittajat.

The coronavirus has spread dramatically in Sri Lanka, resulting in constantly increasing rates of daily infections and deaths. A curfew prevails in the country, being effective in periods of a few weeks at a time and varying in different parts of the country. The majority of people have no work because all the places have been closed again, right after the emergence of a small flicker of hope.

 

Food prices – fish, chicken, vegetables and rice – have skyrocketed and, thus, not everyone has enough to eat. At the moment, we continue to provide our help mainly in the form of food and it is made possible by you, our wonderful donors.
