Vähitellen alkaa koulun muoto hahmottua.

The school house is taking shape little by little.

Boossan kylän koulussa opiskellaan ahkerasti. 

Jotkut asiat on englannin tunnillakin tarkennettava ihan omalla kielellä, sinhalalla. 

Children are studying hard in the Boossa village school. In English lessons some matters still have to be clarified in their own language, Sinhalese.

Jossakin ryhmässä on väljempää, jossakin sitten taas vuorostaan istutaan ahtaammasti.

In some groups there is more space and in others pupils are sitting more closely.

Telluschool tukiyhdistys ry. piti vuosikokouksensa kuluneella viikolla, Iloksemme totesimme, että ihmisten kiinnostus koulua kohtaan on ollut runsasta ja lahjoittajiakin on tullut lisää. Yhdistyksen alkutaipaleen matkalta haluan välittää näin tässä lämpimät kiitokset tukijoillemme! Vain teidän ansiosta olemme saaneet nyt jo toisen koulumme alulleen Rejjapuran kylässä ja pystymme sitä jatkamaan 

Suomalaisia vierailijoita on käynyt tutustumassa kouluihin ja tässä kevään aikana on tarkoitus jatkaa terveydenhuoltoyhteistyön kehittämistä suomalaisten yksityishenkilöiden kanssa. 

The Telluschool Support Association had its annual meeting in the past week. We were happy to discover that there has been plenty of interest in the school and the number of donors has also increased. From the Association’s initial phase I wish to express our warmest thanks to our supporters! It is only thanks to you that we have been able to lay the foundations of our second school in the village of Rejjapura and are able to continue it. Finnish visitors have come to see the schools, and during this spring the aim is to continue the development of health care collaboration with Finnish private persons.

The new school

Uuden, Rejjapuran kylään tulevan toisen koulumme perustustyötä ja nousevaa seinää tässä muutamalla kuvalla:

Laastin teko on todella kätevän näköistä puuhaa, eri ainekset sekoittuvat hyvin ja nopeasti maassa miesten ja lapioiden tehdessä työtä.

Here you can see a few photos of the foundation work and the rising of a wall of our new, second school in the Rejjapura village.

Making mortar is a really handy job: different ingredients are mixed well and fast on the ground while the men and shovels are doing the job.

Ystävänpäivätervehdys

Toista Telluschool-koulua rakennetaan Rejjapuran kylään, noin 10 km päähän ensimmäisestä, reilu vuosi sitten rakennetusta koulusta.

Perustukset on valmiit ja seinät alkavat kohota pikkuhiljaa. Rakentaminen etenee lahjoitusvarojen karttumisen tahtiin. 

Alunperin koulusta oli tarkoitus tulla pienempi, mutta kylän runsaan lapsiluvun takia ja lahjoitusten turvin suunnittelimme kouluun myös toisen kerroksen, joka rakennetaan sitten, kun siihen on mahdollisuus.

Toiseen kerrokseen tulee keittiö ja ruokailutilaa, jossa lapsille voidaan tarjota vatsan täytettä.

Koulussa tulee toimimaan aamupäivisin tavallinen koulu ja iltapäivisin varattomille maksuton specialschool eli tilat tulevat olemaan täydessä käytössä ja ovat todella tarpeen tässä väkirikkaassa, syrjäisessä kylässä.

Olemme suunnitelleet suomalaisten ammattilaisten kanssa myös terveydenhoidollisia asioita kouluihin, osaksi ne ovat jo toteutuneetkin. 

Boossan kylässä olevassa koulussamme on jo tarkastettu oppilaiden hampaat ja annettu perheille hampaidenhoito-opetusta. Kiitos siitä kuuluu kahdelle tomeralle suomalaisnaiselle. Sydäntä lämmittää heidän auttavainen mielensä ja tehokas asialle omistautuminen.

Aikaansaavia ja positiivisia naisia!

The second Telluschool is under construction in the Rejjapura village, about 10 km away from the first one, which was built over a year ago. The foundations are ready and the walls will go up gradually. Building will progress at the pace of receiving donation funds. Originally, we planned a smaller school, but owing to the high number of children in the village and with the help of donations, we designed another floor to the school and it will be built when possible. The second floor will have a kitchen and a refectory where we can offer the children something to fill their bellies with.

In the mornings, the school will operate as ordinary school, and in the afternoons there will be free special school for children from poor families and, thus, the premises will be in full use and are really needed in this densely populated, distant village.

Together with Finnish professionals we have also planned health care issues for the schools, and some of them have already been carried out. In our school in the Boossa village pupils have had their teeth checked, and advice on dental care has been provided to the families, thanks to two, energetic Finnish ladies. Their helpful mind and efficient devotion to the cause warm my heart. Able and positive ladies!

Tässä yli vuoden vanha kuva Sri Lankalaisesta perheestämme. Juuri heidän pihassaan on ensimmäinen Telluschool-koulu (nurkka näkyykin tuossa oikealla). 
Kovin ovat muuttuneet kaikki tuosta kuvasta; lapset kasvaneet ja aikuisetkin osin toisen näköisiä :)
Perhe huolehtii koulun toiminnasta esimerkillisesti ja auttavat kaikin mahdollisin tavoin, että homma toimii.

Saan piakkoin tuoreita kuvia toisen koulun rakennustyömaalta...niitä odotellessa;)

Here is a photo of our Sri Lankan family, taken over a year ago. Actually, it is their home yard where the first Telluschool was set up (you can see the corner on the right). Everybody has changed a lot from that picture; the children have grown and even the adults look different☺. The family takes care of the school in an exemplary way and helps in every possible way to make things run smoothly.

I will soon receive recent photos from the building site of the second school…until then☺.

Festivities and everyday life Juhlaa ja arkea

Telluschool reached its first anniversary on 24 December 2014, which was a cause for celebration☺

Telluschool täytti vuoden 24.12.2014 ja sitä juhlittiin :)

 

Koulu oli täpötäynnä. Tarjoilu oli kaunis ja maistui kaikille, niin lapsille kuin aikuisillekin. Ystäväperheemme äiti Dulini oli sen valmistanut. Lapset saivat myös uusia vihkoja ja muita koulutarvikkeita, joita olin tuonut Suomesta ja osa oli ostettu paikan päällä.

The school was packed. Food was beautifully served and everybody liked it, both the children and the adults. It had been prepared by Dulini, the mother of the host family. The children also got new notebooks and other school materials, which I had brought with me from Finland, and some others bought on the spot.

      Ääntä ja liikettä riitti, mutta pyydettäessä lapset istuivat hiljaa paikoillaan. 














Toisen koulun suunnittelu on hyvällä mallilla ja ensimmäiseenkin kouluun on tullut uutta. Aamupäivisin siellä aloittaa muutamana päivänä viikossa nuori kemian opettaja opettamaan peruskoulunsa päättäneille nuorille matikkaa ja fys/kem. Näin nuoret saavat parempaa pohjaa jatko-opinnoille. Ja mikä ihmeellisintä, tämä nuorimies ei halua missään tapauksessa palkkaa. Kun kysyin miksi, hän sanoi että hänellä on kaikkea mitä tarvitsee. Hän on siis paikallinen. Käypi opettamassa eri kylissä nuorille noita em.
Uuden koulun tontista sen verran, että sinne on lupautunut talkoilla kylän väkeä raivaamaan kasvustoa ja isoimpia puita. Ehkä jo tällä viikolla ennen kotiin lähtöäni ehdin nähdä raivatun tontin:-)
Papereihin on pitäyt hakea leimoja ja viedä sitten niitä paikasta toiseen...toisenlaista byrokratiaa täällä, ihan mielenkiintoista nähdä tällaistakin.

Tänään oli sadetta luvassa,ei satanut. Huomiselle myös, saapa nähdä...

The planning of the second school is well under way, and there have been some new events in the first school as well. In the mornings, a young chemistry teacher starts teaching maths and physics/chemistry a few days a week to youngsters who have finished comprehensive school, thus providing them with a better basis for their further studies. And what is most surprising, this young man does not want wages on any account. When I asked why, he said that he has everything he needs. He is a local and goes around different villages teaching young people the above mentioned subjects.

Speaking about the new school’s site, people of the village have volunteered to come to clear away vegetation and bigger trees. Perhaps as early as this week, before I go home, I may see the cleared site☺

It has been necessary to get stamps to the documents and, then, take them from one place to another…different kind of bureaucracy here, quite interesting to see this side as well.

Rain was forecast for today, it didn’t rain. Also for tomorrow, we shall see…

                           

Jouluaattona oli myös toinen tapahtuma, joka jäi mieleeni todella ennen kokemattomana asiana. Jaoimme Suomesta tuomiani silmälaseja. Ihmisiä tungeksi pienessä tilassa ja ulkopuolella odotti joukko vuoroaan. 
Tuli toden teolla mieleen, että me täällä Suomessa emme kaiketi tajua, miten helposti ja vaivatta me saamme monet asiat, joita esim. tässä toisessa maassa on lähes mahdoton saada...vaikka asia olisi kuinka tärkeä. 
Hyvin tarkkaan jokainen kokeili laseja ja tutkaili, näkeekö niillä hyvin. Väkijoukossa kiersi sanomalehti ja jossain vaiheessa siitä revittiin palasia, että jokainen pystyi katsomaan, millä laseilla näkee tekstiä selvimmin.
Viikon päästä tapasin kuuron rouvan, joka oli myös tässä em. tilaisuudessa mukana ja hän kertoi, että nyt näkee laittaa langan neulansilmään, on niin onnellinen siitä. Kyllä se veti aika sanattomaksi!

On Christmas Eve, there was another event which stuck in my mind as something I have never experienced before. We were distributing the glasses which I had brought from Finland. People were crowding in a small space and outside there was a group waiting for their turn. It really hit me that we in Finland do not understand how easy and convenient it is for us to get many things which in this country are almost impossible to obtain…no matter how important the issue. Everyone was putting on the glasses very carefully, trying to find out whether they could see well. A newspaper was passed around in the crowd and, at some point, pieces of it were torn so that everyone could see which glasses were the best to read the text. A week later, I met a deaf lady, who had also attended this occasion, and she told me that she can now see to thread the needle and it makes her so happy. That left me speechless!

Tämä rouva yritti saada silmälasit ns. takaoven kautta...ja saikin ja oli tyytyväinen :)
This lady tried to get glasses ‘through the back door’… and also succeeded and was happy☺



Jokainen lasit löytänyt halusi tulla kuvatuksi, oli vaan illan valo jo hiukka hämärä eikä salamaa laitteessa.
Everybody who had found a suitable pair of glasses wanted to be photographed, but the light of the evening was getting dim and I had no flashlight in the machine.



Muutaman päivän päästä perheemme isän tuttavapoliisi oli kuullut silmälaseista ja soitti, olisiko hänellekin yhdet. Jäljellä oli vielä kahdet ja toiset olivat hänelle juuri käypäset ja jopa vielä tummennuksella. On niillä hyvä liikenteessä mennä ja valvoa että kaikki on hyvin auringon alla.
A few days later, a police friend of our host family’s father had heard about the glasses and phoned if there were any left for him as well. Two pairs of glasses were still available and the other ones were just right for him and they were even tinted. Now, it is fine to patrol traffic and see that all is well under the sun.



Koulun maalausta suunniteltiin ja lopulta se toteutettiin perheen voimin. Auringon väriä ja valkoista.
Plans for painting the school were made and, in the end, it was carried out by the family. Colour of the sun and white.

Naapurikylä Rejjapura on köyhä kylä, jossa asuu paljon lapsiperheitä. Sinne aloitimme puuhaamaan toista Telluschool-koulua. Tähän kouluun tulee sekä aamupäivä- että iltapäiväryhmä. 
Kiitos lahjoittajien, tämä koulu on mahdollista aloittaa rakentamaan ja asiassa edetään sen mukaan, miten varat sallivat.
The neighbouring village of Rejjapura is a poor village where there are many families with children. There we planned to set up our second Telluschool. This school will have both morning and afternoon groups. Thanks to our donors, it is possible to start building this school, and we will proceed as funds permit.

                       Kylän väkeä kokoontui pikkuhiljaa ihmettelemään, mitä tapahtuu.
                       The village people were slowly gathering to see what was happening.

                                    


                                   

Tämä mies oli tehnyt laskentaa kylän väkimäärästä. Taloja siellä on noin 250-300 ja yhdessä talossa asuu noin 5-8 hlöä, lapsia suurin osa.
This man had counted the population of the village. There are about 250-300 houses, and in each house, there are 5-8 persons, mostly children.

                             

                     

Sitten olikin kaivinkoneen aika vähän myllätä ja tasoitella paikkoja, että päästiin lyömään ensimmäinen mittapaalu maahan...
Then, it was time for the excavator to turn and level the earth to enable us to hit the first measuring pole to the ground…

Hello from Sri Lanka!

Hei Sri Lankasta!
Ei vaan suostu kuvat lähtemään, mutta laitanpa muutaman sanan tulemaan. Ensi viikolla sitten kuvia.
Toisen koulun suunnittelu on hyvällä mallilla ja ensimmäiseenkin kouluun on tullut uutta. Aamupäivisin siellä aloittaa muutamana päivänä viikossa nuori kemian opettaja opettamaan peruskoulunsa päättäneille nuorille matikkaa ja fys/kem. Näin nuoret saavat parempaa pohjaa jatko-opinnoille. Ja mikä ihmeellisintä, tämä nuorimies ei halua missään tapauksessa palkkaa. Kun kysyin miksi, hän sanoi että hänellä on kaikkea mitä tarvitsee. Hän on siis paikallinen. Käypi opettamassa eri kylissä nuorille noita em.
Uuden koulun tontista sen verran, että sinne on lupautunut talkoilla kylän väkeä raivaamaan kasvustoa ja isoimpia puita. Ehkä jo tällä viikolla ennen kotiin lähtöäni ehdin nähdä raivatun tontin:-)

Hello from Sri Lanka!
