An old photo

Tässä yli vuoden vanha kuva Sri Lankalaisesta perheestämme. Juuri heidän pihassaan on ensimmäinen Telluschool-koulu (nurkka näkyykin tuossa oikealla).

Here is a photo of our Sri Lankan family, taken over a year ago. Actually, it is their home yard where the first Telluschool was set up (you can see the corner on the right). Everybody has changed a lot from that picture; the children have grown and even the adults look different☺. The family takes care of the school in an exemplary way and helps in every possible way to make things run smoothly.
I will soon receive recent photos from the building site of the second school…until then☺.

The school was packed. Food was beautifully served and everybody liked it, both the children and the adults. It had been prepared by Dulini, the mother of the host family. The children also got new notebooks and other school materials, which I had brought with me from Finland, and some others bought on the spot.

The planning of the second school is well under way, and there have been some new events in the first school as well. In the mornings, a young chemistry teacher starts teaching maths and physics/chemistry a few days a week to youngsters who have finished comprehensive school, thus providing them with a better basis for their further studies. And what is most surprising, this young man does not want wages on any account. When I asked why, he said that he has everything he needs. He is a local and goes around different villages teaching young people the above mentioned subjects.
Speaking about the new school’s site, people of the village have volunteered to come to clear away vegetation and bigger trees. Perhaps as early as this week, before I go home, I may see the cleared site☺
It has been necessary to get stamps to the documents and, then, take them from one place to another…different kind of bureaucracy here, quite interesting to see this side as well.
Rain was forecast for today, it didn’t rain. Also for tomorrow, we shall see…

On Christmas Eve, there was another event which stuck in my mind as something I have never experienced before. We were distributing the glasses which I had brought from Finland. People were crowding in a small space and outside there was a group waiting for their turn. It really hit me that we in Finland do not understand how easy and convenient it is for us to get many things which in this country are almost impossible to obtain…no matter how important the issue. Everyone was putting on the glasses very carefully, trying to find out whether they could see well. A newspaper was passed around in the crowd and, at some point, pieces of it were torn so that everyone could see which glasses were the best to read the text. A week later, I met a deaf lady, who had also attended this occasion, and she told me that she can now see to thread the needle and it makes her so happy. That left me speechless!

Photo

This lady tried to get glasses ‘through the back door’… and also succeeded and was happy☺

Photo

Jokainen lasit löytänyt halusi tulla kuvatuksi, oli vaan illan valo jo hiukka hämärä eikä salamaa laitteessa.
Everybody who had found a suitable pair of glasses wanted to be photographed, but the light of the evening was getting dim and I had no flashlight in the machine.

Photo

A few days later, a police friend of our host family’s father had heard about the glasses and phoned if there were any left for him as well. Two pairs of glasses were still available and the other ones were just right for him and they were even tinted. Now, it is fine to patrol traffic and see that all is well under the sun.

Photo

Plans for painting the school were made and, in the end, it was carried out by the family. Colour of the sun and white.

                                                                         A painter’s hands…light shades can well be distinguished☺

Naapurikylä Rejjapura on köyhä kylä, jossa asuu paljon lapsiperheitä. Sinne aloitimme puuhaamaan toista Telluschool-koulua.
The neighbouring village of Rejjapura is a poor village where there are many families with children. There we planned to set up our second Telluschool. This school will have both morning and afternoon groups. Thanks to our donors, it is possible to start building this school, and we will proceed as funds permit.

....problems with the computer...

Hei!

Uuden koulun tontilla alkaa kohta tapahtua.

Hi!
Still unable to post photos, what a pity! But there will be a good many of them when I get back home☺…if I don’t succeed before that.
In the year-old school we have been painting walls, and it gives so much joy to see that when you start doing something, villagers will soon come to help. The interior walls are now white and bright yellow, later on we will paint some pictures on them.
On the new school’s site, action will soon take place. Villagers have already volunteered to clear the area from vegetation and fell unnecessary trees. We have had a few planning meetings with the architect. In the middle of the jungle we were looking at the plans on the computer and changing them on the spot.
Also, it has been fun and interesting to follow the distribution of the glasses I brought with me. Only yesterday one policeman received a good pair of spectacles, among the last ones still left. You can once again start gathering any glasses lying about and send them to me so that I can bring them here sometimes in the future for those in need☺.

Christmas Eve

Olemme todella kiitollisia lahjoittajille.

27 December 2014
Christmas Eve celebrations are over and they were a huge success. In spite of the school holiday season, 80 children and some dozens of mothers, and one father, turned up. Usually, fathers are fishing, recovering from overnight fishing or getting ready for the next fishing trip. For many days, I have been trying to post photos, but for some reason or another, they won’t come through; whether it is due to the connection, gadget, or the typist, who knows;-)
The celebrations had delicious food, mainly prepared by the mother of our host family, Dulini, with some assistance of the grandmother. The school was bursting at the seams and full of noise, but on the whole, children kept still…well, partly because of lack of space;-)
The children showed what they have learned, there was a couple of short speeches, the children were given the school materials which I had bought or brought with me from Finland and other nice things. We told the crowd about the future plans, the possible second school. It was greeted with joy. Once again, I was struck by the gratitude shining from every face.
The planning of the new school has progressed to a point that this morning we were measuring the area together with the architect, and he sketched a rough design. When I get back to Finland, I hope that the designs will be ready so that I can take them with me. I will post photos as soon as it is possible…sooner or later.
The Keskisuomalainen newspaper’s feature on the Christmas Eve paper issue has resulted in inquiries how to help Telluschool, and indeed, we have received help. Therefore, we will be able to start building the second school quite soon. We are very grateful for the donors. Many warm thoughts and encouragement give us faith and confidence in this project. I wish to thank you for that!
With warm, now also sunny, regards…because at Christmas time, we had terrible rains and winds here. Inland, people have died in landslides, and land has disappeared from underneath railways and houses. The president election is also going on here, current Mr. Rajapaksa is to be changed to a new one. It remains to be seen if the voting percentage will be higher than the usual 50 per cent. Yesterday, it was the 10th anniversary of the tsunami but it was hardly to be noticed on the street scene. Here in Hikkaduwa, there was some kind of a memorial event but I had no information of it. Of course I would have been present if I had known. Those who did not suffer any losses then do not talk about it much.
Farewell.

School photos Koulukuvia

School photos

Koulun lomasta huolimatta kourallinen oppilaita on paikalla ja opetus sujuu hyvin.

In spite of the school holidays, a handful of pupils are attending and teaching is carried on smoothly.

Näissä Special-schooleissa ei tarvitse olla koulupukua lapsilla eikä opettajallakaan saria päällä, kuten aamupäiväkouluissa pitää.

In these Special schools, children are not obliged to wear school uniforms and the teacher does not have to wear Sari as is the case in the morning schools.

 This is a mug.

Kouluun on saatu liitutaulukin.

We have managed to get a blackboard to the school.

Uuden, naapurikylään tulevan koulun paikka, huussikin jo valmiina. Koulun yllä tulee olemaan tämä jackfruitpuiden  muodostama korkeuksiin kohoava holvi, joka varjostaa mukavasti paahteelta.

The place of the new school in the neighbouring village, a toilet already complete. Above the school house, there will be this arch formed by the jack fruit trees rising into the air, providing a nice shade from the sun.

Tässä kylässä on parisataa taloa lapsia keskimäärin 5-6 per perhe. Koulu tulee todella tarpeeseen. Kiitos lahjoittajien, tämä hanke on toteutumassa.

This village has about two hundred houses, with the average of 5-6 children in each family. The school will really be needed. Thanks to the donors, this scheme will materialize.

Greetings

Tervehdys Sri Lankasta!
Täällä on varsin lämminta, kuten varmaan aika helppo arvatakin.
Kouluilla on aina joulukuussa lomaa ja koulu alkaa taas 20.12. Lomasta huolimatta osa lapsista tulee kouluun ja opettaja on paikalla. Tämä ope on nuori mutta erittäin pätevän oloinen...toisaalta näiden ihmisten ikää on vaikea arvioida, pitänee kysyä ihan suoraan.
Tällä viikolla maalaamme koulun sisäseinät ja sitten ensi viikolla on vuosijuhlat. Tarjoamme lapsille jotain hyvää, nam.
Kirjoitan tätä pienellä tabletilla, joten anteeksi kirjoitusvirheet. Kuviakaan en saa lähtemäänjoten pitää hakeutua isomman koneen ääreen, niin sitten laitan jatkoa...olisivideonpätkiäkin lasten opiskeluloruista yms.
Näkemiin täältä;-)

17 December 2014
Greetings from Sri Lanka!
It is quite warm here as you may have easily guessed. Schools always have their holidays in December, and the school will start again on 20 December. In spite of the holidays, some children come to school and the teacher is present. This teacher is young but highly competent…on the other hand, it is hard to estimate the age of these people, one may have to ask directly.
This week we will paint the interior walls and next week we will have the anniversary celebration. We will offer something sweet to the children, yum-yum.
I am writing this on a small tablet, so please excuse my typing mistakes. I cannot post photos either, I must find a bigger machine so that I can continue this, I would also have a short video of children learning the rhymes etc.
Bye-bye from here;-)
